Karyotypes and Pedigrees

A karyotype reers to the number, size and pattern of the chromosomes in an individual's cells. Chromosomes become visible in a cell's nucleus during the process of cell division. This process is arrested, and a dye is applied to enhance the appearance of the chromosomes. In order to make the karyotype, the chromosomes are grouped in pairs by size. Differences between the chromosomes can reveal genetic abnormalities.
