Game of Survival
Picture
Lamark believed that organisms changed over time by passing on traits acquired during an individual's lifetime to its offspring. As a consequence, he believed giraffes evolved longer necks to reach moer desirable leaves on higher branches because their necks stretched and they passed that trait on. Darwin, on the other hand, postulated that some giraffes had longer necks than others and over time those who were most successful at surviving interbred until the desirable characteristic was dominant. The competition for survival meant that those giraffes who were unsuited for the environment died.
Jean Baptiste Lamarck
